Samuel Thring was married on February 15, 1801 to Sarah Day at Saint Anne Soho, Westminister, London England. (Source: FamilySearch). His son, Samuel James Thring born 1806 in England. Migrated to South Africa with his then wife Elizabeth Treleaven-Abbot who was born in 1816. They were married at Westminister St. Paul Covent Garden on the 10th of August, 1835. This appears to be his second wife. They migrated to South Africa on a ship called the Sovereign which left Plymouth on November 24, 1849 with 9 children. Their last known address in London was in Marylebone. The children were: Alfred (20, Thomas (18), Henry b. 02 06 1836, James b. 22 01 1838, Emma b. 14 05 1840, Edwin b. 08 05 1842, Francis b. 15 03 1845, Jane b. 11 09 1847, and Alice b. 30 09 1849. Samuel James Thring is our common great grandfather, who was the father of James (Jim) Thring who founded “Thring’s Post” in Stanger.


This family was allotted 281 _ acres at Veralum in Natal. Samuel James Thring was a joiner and cartwright by trade. He died 08 July, 1851 at Mt. Moreland as reported in the Natal Independent Newspaper 24 07 1851. He died in a horse and trap accident. His widow married a Mr. Samuel Bull of Mount Albert.



Alfred Thring was married to Mary Ann Baker. Children: (1.) Frederick Lester Thring, b. ??? 1864 in Ladysmith, Natal. Died 23 October, 1909 in Stuartstown, Ixopo; Married 4th December, 1890 to Margret Ann Foster; 5 children. (2.) Isabella Maud Thring, b. ??? 1871 in Ladysmith, Natal. Died 31 March 1911 in Ixopo, Natal; Married 2 May 1894 to Frderick Samuel Benningfield; 4 children.


Thomas Thring is believed to be the one who drowned, while on a hunting trip, near Ngwvuma, Northern Natal. It is believed he was never married and had no children.


Henry Harry Thring born 02/06/1836, married Febrary, 1861 Catherine Petronella Landman in Verulam Natal. Emma Jane was the only child of this marriage who in 15 October, 1879 applied to the Supreme Court for appointment of her uncle Edwin Thring as her guardian. She was 17, and was placed in Edwin’s charge by her father when she was 13 [sic]. Her mother was dead and she had heard nothing of her father for many years. She wished to marry Cornelius Engelbert Gielink, and needed permission of a parent or guardian. Edwin Thring in the same application stated that Emma had lived with him for 13 [sic] years. ( National Archives of South Africa, 1879).

It is also found that Henry Harry Thring married Christina Pietronella Klopper. She had two children, Martin Belisazar and Coenrad, by a previous marriage. Previous marriage because of the children’s Afrikaans names. Christina Pietronella Klopper was born in Swaziland. (NASA, 1959).

His second name “Harry” is revealed in his brother-in-law, Petrus Landman’s, papers found in the archives in Pietermaritzburg. It was in connection with Petrus Landman, and the murder of Captain Alexander Gordon. In a deposition dated 20 December, 1861 by Thomas Jones, general agent of Pietermaritzburg, who had been dealing with Gordon’s affairs. He states that Petrus’s brother-in-law was Harry Thring. The deposition is in the Attorney General’s papers ( NASA, 1861).

Henry Harry Thring married Elizabeth Shandu aka maMbatha, date unknown in Swaziland. They had five children: John Harry Thring, Nellie Thring, Albert Thring, Jessy Thring, and Henry Arthur Thring born abt. 1889 died 26/04/1976, buried in Stellawood. LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLJL
Henry Harry Thring married LaMotsa, date unknown in Swaziland. They had nine children: Herbert George Thring, Fred Thring, Ruby Thring, Frank Thring, Annie Thring, Lucy Thring, Tilly Thring, Mary Thring, and Martha Thring.

Henry Arthur Thring faught in the first world war in 1917. Upon his return at the age of 29 he married Alice Margret Young. They raised: Roland Ronald Ikie Thring, Kennith Thring, Nancy Thring, Frank Thring, Nelson Edwin Thring, Ruby Elsie Thring, Jimmy Thring, Mark Thring, Hilton Thring, and Alice Polly Thring.

Henry Harry Thring was a transport-rider of Swaziland. He founded “Thring’s Post” in Hluti. Thring’s Post is 5 km west of Hluti in Southern Swaziland. Thring’s Post was marked on H. E. Schoch’s map (1914). (Jones, H. M., 1902).


James Samuel Thring
married Catherine Sarah Fuller in 14/2/1868 in Durban. She was born 4/2/1850; died 24/4/1940 in Marburg. ( O’Byrne-Spencer, Shelagh, 2001). Samuel James Thring founded “Thrings Post” in Stanger. It has a postal code of 4457, Stanger. James Thring died on 10 July, 1911.
Lucy Emma Thring m. Thomas Peachey in 16 August 1860. Drowned with husband and children in RMS Drummand Castle, Ushant France Kent.


Edwin Thring was a transport-rider of Stanger.

*Frank Thring and Mary Peachey had nine children and lived in Kearsney and Stanger. He was a builder by trade. He built the Sugar mill at Kearsney. They are buried in Stanger Cemetry.
Their children were: Thomas Peachey Thring b. 16/01/1869 d. 25/04/1872; Alice Mary Thring b.17/08/1871 d. 04/01/1907, Florence Elvina Thring b. 19/11/ 1873, Bessie Kenion Thring b. 09/03/01876 d. 21/08/1906, Arthur Francis Thring b. 23/04/1879 , Frederick Charles Thring b.19/05/1881 d. 17/02/1910, Percy Edward Thring b. 23/03/1884 d. 26/09/1938, Cyril Guy Thring b. 10/02/1888 d. 08/03/1917 and Reginald Douglas Thring b. 7/12/1889 d. 2/02/1957.

Reginald Douglas Thring had six children He was a messenger of the Court at Stanger. He married Anne Dube on 7/12/1933 b.circa1895 d. 2/12/1950. Reginald is buried in Stanger and Anne in Stellawood Durban. Their children were: Jeffrey Thring b. 01/04/1910 d. 29/01/1965, Kaiser Frederick Thring b. 11/06/1916 d. 05/02/1991, Bessie Phyliss Thring b.20/11/1920, Kemp Edward Thring b.01/02/1922, Kathleen Thring b. 15/07/1924, and Eunice Thring b.17/02/1926 d.13/02/2000.

Kemp Thring married Madge Muriel Mary Oakes in Ixopo Natal South.Africa on 3 Feb 1951. They emigrated to Melbourne Australia1976-1980.
Their children are: Mark Douglas Thring, Michael Llewlyn Calvin Thring, Rosemund June Thring, Marcel Andre Thring b. 27 Aug 1958 d. 24 Feb 1979 buried in Ixopo and Lionel Kemp Thring.

Lionel Kemp Thring married Leanne Nicole Thring in Melbourne Australia on 19/09/1987.
Their children are: Jerom Klein Thring, Jasmine Sara Thring, Elliott James Kemp Thring, Isabella Joy Larisssa Thring


Jane Thring. married James Waugh 07/05/1866 Hermannsburg. She died in August 1903. According to Lionel she died about 1943 in Tongaat.


Alice Thring. married Frank Munro 23/11/1868 Mt. Albert Natal.
